Magazine cover analysis

Magazine cover analysis

The masthead uses same font, colours, size and position used most of the time, some of the masthead is covered but not too much as to hide it away.

Extra information is added to attract buyers, and fill up space, also a secondary image is used to further illustrate and entice consumers that were attracted by the selling line by giving them a glimpse of what the selling line is actually selling. In this case it’s a black and white image of Liam Gallagher the lead singer of the Britpop band Oasis. The selling line is used to pull in costumers to buy the magazine as they are being given something for the purchase of the magazine, which is why it is placed at the top so.

The main image is of three models being the members of the alternative rock band ‘Muse’. The way they are arranged of the bassist and the drummer being on either side of the singer gives the magazine a sense of symmetry which appeals positively to the eye. The direct gaze is challenging although nullified by the casual clothing. The background of an Italian mountain background connotes that the band (and magazine) is so popular that they are known worldwide.

The main covet line is written in the biggest font, not many cover lines, just a few showing the main features in the magazine, also the cover line the cover line is in a smaller font than the main cover line as it is not the most important. The barcode is tucked away in a small section of the page.

The use of the colours and font suggests that the target audience is teenagers, compared to Q magazine who are aimed at an older audience. The colours used for the writing relate back to the NME logo as they use mainly white and red, the colour red is a good contrast to the black and white clothes that the band members are using, however white text goes over the white shirt of the singer of the band, making it stand out and distinguishable.
